More than 18,000 new homes could be built in Sydney’s inner west under a major rezoning proposal tied to the future Burwood North Metro station, the NSW government announced on Tuesday.
The plan would rezone a 113‑hectare precinct around the upcoming station, positioning Burwood North as a high‑density residential hub between Sydney’s CBD and Parramatta. The proposal allows for up to 18,300 homes and is expected to create 3,900 jobs.
Last April, the government estimated the area could support around 15,000 homes, but Planning Minister Paul Scully said the earlier plan didn’t fully capture the development potential of a metro‑connected precinct.
“The previous proposal didn’t necessarily take in the full opportunity that can come around a metro station,” Scully said. He added that aligning housing growth with major infrastructure made expanding the plan a “no‑brainer.”
The rezoning covers an 800‑metre radius around the future Burwood North Metro station, which is scheduled to open in 2032. Once operational, the station is expected to connect commuters to both the CBD and Parramatta in roughly 10 minutes, significantly boosting accessibility.
The announcement follows last week’s reveal of thousands of new homes planned for a newly designated inner‑Sydney suburb, as the state government accelerates efforts to address housing supply pressures.
