The Iranian women’s national team faced a tense and uncertain end to their Women’s Asian Cup campaign on the Gold Coast, with chaotic scenes unfolding after their 2-0 loss to the Philippines on Sunday.
As the team attempted to leave the stadium, around 200 protesters surrounded and blocked their bus, banging on the vehicle and chanting “let them go.” The confrontation lasted roughly 15 minutes before police intervened, pushing back demonstrators to clear a path. Inside the bus, Iranian players were seen taking photos of the dramatic scenes.
The unrest followed Iran’s defeat, sealed by goals from the Philippines’ Sara Eggesvik and Chandler McDaniel, which left Iran bottom of Group A and eliminated from the tournament.
Before kickoff, Iran’s players and coaching staff once again sang the national anthem and delivered a military-style salute the second time they have done so in the tournament. Their earlier refusal to sing the anthem before their opening match against South Korea drew fierce backlash from Iranian state media, which branded the team “traitors” and “the pinnacle of dishonour,” especially coming less than 48 hours after the US–Israel assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
With the team now out of the competition, questions loom over what awaits them upon returning home, given the political scrutiny surrounding their actions on and off the pitch.
