First Flight Out of the Middle East Lands Safely in Sydney as Relieved Australians Return Home

2 min read

The first commercial flight to depart the Middle East for Australia since the outbreak of the US‑Israel war with Iran has touched down safely in Sydney, bringing home hundreds who spent days trapped in uncertainty and fear.

Emirates flight EK414 from Dubai arrived around 10:30pm AEDT, carrying about 200 Australians who had been stranded amid airspace closures and rapidly escalating regional conflict. After clearing customs, many were met with emotional embraces as families rushed forward to welcome them home.

Among the earliest to walk through the arrival gates was a group of 19 students and four teachers from Barker College on Sydney’s north shore. The group had been en route to Türkiye for a robotics competition when the conflict erupted during their stopover in Dubai.

Cheers erupted in the arrivals hall as the students appeared, smiling with relief despite their exhaustion. Barker College head Phillip Heath, who greeted them at the airport, said he was deeply grateful to Australian officials who helped secure their return.

He said he had not yet had the chance to fully debrief the group, but the students told him they had heard the conflict unfolding overhead and spent one night sheltering in a hotel basement. “Our next step is to get them back so they’ve got somebody to talk to,” he said.

Their safe arrival marks a rare moment of relief for families still anxiously waiting for loved ones to find a way out of the region.
