Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and their daughter Zaima Rahman, paid solemn tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement in the early hours of 21 February at the Central Shaheed Minar. The nation’s most sacred observance began just before midnight, when President Mohammed Shahabuddin arrived to lay the first floral wreath. He stood in silent reflection before departing the premises.
Moments later, the Prime Minister made his way to the altar, placing a wreath in honour of the language heroes and observing a moment of silence. Prayers were offered seeking eternal peace for the martyrs who laid down their lives in 1952 to defend the right to speak Bangla.
At 12:12am, Tarique Rahman returned to the altar with members of his Cabinet, including ministers, state ministers and advisers, to place floral tributes on behalf of the government. The atmosphere was solemn and reverent as the nation’s leadership stood united in remembrance.
The Prime Minister, joined by his wife and daughter, then laid flowers once more and paused briefly in silent tribute, marking the profound significance of the day that shaped Bangladesh’s linguistic and cultural identity.
