Former NSW Governor Dame Marie Bashir Dies; State Funeral Announced

1 min read

Dame Marie Bashir, the first woman to serve as Governor of New South Wales and one of the state’s most admired public figures, has died, Premier Chris Minns has confirmed.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, the premier described her as “an extraordinary Australian and one of New South Wales’ most respected public servants.” He said a state funeral would be held to honour the “deeply loved mother of three children and six grandchildren.”

Premier Minns extended condolences on behalf of the people of NSW, noting the profound impact of her decades of service.

Dame Marie Bashir served as Governor from 2001 to 2014, a 14‑year tenure marked by dignity, compassion and widespread respect. According to the premier, she chose not to extend her term further because she did not wish to surpass Sir Roden Cutler as the state’s longest‑serving governor.

Her passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in NSW public life.
