Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal is set to deliver its second verdict since being reconstituted, with the full proceedings scheduled to be broadcast live on state television.

Tribunal 1 will announce its judgment today against eight accused, a group that includes former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman. The verdict date was fixed for 20 January after both prosecution and defence teams wrapped up their arguments. A three member bench led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder confirmed the schedule in late December.

Those facing trial include Md Arshad Hossain, Md Sujan Mia, Md Imaz Hossain Emon and Md Nasirul Islam. Four others, including Habibur Rahman and senior former police officials from the Ramna and DMP regions, remain absconding.

Charges were formally framed on 14 July, clearing the way for the trial to begin.

According to case documents, police opened fire on a peaceful student protest in Chankharpul on 5 August 2024. Several demonstrators were killed, including Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Junaid, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Howlader, Md Ismamul Haque and Manik Mia Shahrik, while many others were injured.
