Firefighters Contain Fast Moving Blaze Near New Housing Community in Rockbank

1 min read

A fast moving grassfire in Rockbank prompted a major emergency response on Thursday as flames edged toward a newly built housing community on the opposite side of Paynes Road.

Emergency crews positioned themselves along the road and at the entrance to the estate as the fire advanced. According to the State Control Centre, the Country Fire Authority received reports of the blaze around 10:30am.

Firefighters arrived to find a pile of burning tyres that had ignited surrounding grass and was spreading across a paddock toward a rundown property missing part of its roof. Dozens of units, supported by aircraft and Fire Rescue Victoria, were deployed to stop the fire from reaching nearby homes.

By midday, much of the fire’s edge had been extinguished, and authorities declared the situation under control at about 12.12pm.
