A winter storm sweeping across the Northeast and Great Lakes caused major travel disruptions during one of the busiest holiday periods of the year, with more than a thousand flights canceled or delayed and hazardous road conditions reported.
New York City saw around 4 inches (10.2 cm) of snow from Friday night into early Saturday slightly less than expected but the impact on travel was still significant. FlightAware reported at least 1,500 cancellations since Friday night. By Saturday morning, however, conditions had begun to improve as skies cleared and roads were gradually reopened.
“The storm is definitely winding down, a little bit of flurries across the Northeast this morning,” said Bob Oravec, a National Weather Service forecaster based in Maryland.
He noted that snowfall totals varied widely, with parts of central eastern Long Island receiving more than 6 inches (15 cm), while areas in the Catskills recorded up to 10 inches (25 cm).
Major airports Newark Liberty, JFK and LaGuardia issued snow advisories on X, warning travelers of potential delays and cancellations.
The National Weather Service cautioned that dangerous travel conditions would persist from the Great Lakes through the northern mid‑Atlantic and into southern New England, with risks including downed trees and power outages.
