Coalition Taskforce Responds to Bondi Attack, Vows Stronger Action Against Antisemitism

1 min read

Authorities have confirmed that the father-son gunmen behind Sunday’s Chanukah by the Sea attack were inspired by the terror group Islamic State.

In response, the Coalition has formed a taskforce to strengthen protections for Jewish communities and address rising antisemitism. A key priority will be ensuring that all recommendations from antisemitism special envoy Jillian Segal are “progressed, strengthened and implemented.” The Coalition has also signaled it may introduce its own private members’ bills in parliament if necessary.

The taskforce, which includes frontbenchers Michaelia Cash, Jonno Duniam, James Paterson, Julian Leeser, Andrew Wallace, and Bridget McKenzie, met for the first time on Tuesday. Members pledged to identify gaps in law enforcement powers and engage directly with Jewish leaders and organizations to restore confidence and improve community safety.

Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating that antisemitism is a “real and present danger” to Australian lives and requires a “serious national response.”
