Intense traffic congestion gripped the capital on Sunday as hundreds of commuters were forced to walk home after office hours due to road blockages caused by student protests.
The demonstration was organized by students from seven government colleges demanding the issuance of an ordinance for the proposed Dhaka Central University.
Protest Details
Around 400-500 students from Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, and Titumir College began a sit-in outside the Education Building at 1 p.m. Later, several hundred more students from other colleges joined, chanting slogans in support of their demand.
The protest lasted nearly five hours, shutting down roads around the Education Building and triggering gridlock across major areas including Kakrail, Paltan, Gulistan, Shahbagh, and New Market.
Impact on Commuters
The disruption left many office-goers stranded. Eyewitnesses reported seeing people walking home with bags in hand. Some expressed frustration, blaming what they described as weak administrative policies of the government for failing to manage the situation.
