Under the cover of darkness in western Ukraine, influential business magnate Tymur Mindich slipped into a black Mercedes S-Class and crossed into Poland, evading detectives who were closing in on him.
By the night of November 10, Mindich had realized he was under surveillance by anti-corruption investigators, who had uncovered his code name, “Carson.” Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) suspects Mindich and several high-ranking officials, including cabinet ministers, of embezzling millions from the country’s largest energy company through a lucrative kickback scheme.
Hours after his escape, NABU agents raided properties linked to Mindich. In one Kyiv apartment, officers discovered a lavish bathroom featuring a golden toilet, which has since become a striking symbol of the investigation.
Analysts warn the scandal could pose the most serious challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration since Russia launched its full-scale invasion more than three and a half years ago.
