Israel to Reopen Rafah Crossing for Gazans to Exit into Egypt

1 min read

Israel has announced plans to reopen the Rafah crossing in the coming days, allowing residents of Gaza to travel into Egypt. The move, however, applies only for departures from Gaza, not for entry back into the territory.

According to Al Jazeera, the decision is part of Israel’s broader effort to empty Gaza. Israeli forces took control of the Rafah crossing in 2023, several months after the outbreak of war with Hamas. Since then, the crossing has been closed, halting the flow of essential goods and preventing people from leaving for medical treatment or work opportunities in Egypt.

Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) stated that Gazans will be permitted to cross into Egypt with Israeli approval and in coordination with Cairo. Oversight of the process will be handled by a European Union mission.

Previously, in October, a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel was violated when Israel blocked humanitarian aid from entering Gaza through Rafah.
