Commuters across Perth faced major delays on Monday afternoon after a train partially came off the tracks at Bayswater Station, forcing the cancellation of services on several key lines during peak travel time.
The Public Transport Authority (PTA) confirmed that services on the Airport, Ellenbrook, Midland, and Fremantle Lines were disrupted following the incident. A spokesperson said two wheel undercarriages from a railcar had “partially come off the tracks” shortly after departing Bayswater Station at low speed.
All passengers were safely evacuated, and investigators are now working to determine the cause. A two-car train was seen broken down just south of Bayswater Station, with multiple Transperth workers inspecting the track and carriages.
Train services have been cancelled between Perth and Redcliffe, Perth and Morley, and Perth and Bassendean, with replacement buses being arranged. Authorities warned that disruptions would continue beyond the evening peak, urging passengers to allow extra travel time and noting that buses may not connect smoothly with other timetabled services.
One Bayswater resident described the moment of the derailment: “It was like an earthquake,” she said, recalling how her house shook suddenly in the afternoon.
Traffic in the area remains heavy as commuters scramble for alternatives.
