Russia unleashed one of its largest air assaults on Ukraine’s capital over the weekend, firing 595 drones and 48 missiles at Kyiv between midnight Saturday and early Sunday morning. The attack killed at least four civilians and left more than 80 injured, according to Ukrainian officials.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the bombardment lasted 12 hours and described it as a deliberate strike on civilian areas. Ukraine’s air defense systems intercepted 568 drones and 43 missiles, but those that broke through caused widespread destruction.
Residential buildings in Kyiv were reduced to rubble, while power plants and parts of the city’s electricity grid sustained heavy damage. Zelensky urged the United States, European nations, and international bodies including the G7 and G20 to impose tougher punitive measures against Moscow.
The suburbs of Kyiv suffered the worst damage. Entire apartment blocks were destroyed, forcing residents to flee into underground garages and metro stations as air raid sirens wailed through the night.
Russian officials denied targeting civilians, insisting the strikes were aimed only at military infrastructure.
The scale of the attack underscored the intensity of the conflict as Ukraine continues to call for stronger international action to defend its skies and punish Russia for what Kyiv describes as a war against civilians.
