Climate Challenges Push Kaptai Lake Water Levels Near Critical Point

1 min read

Kaptai Lake is currently facing a severe challenge as its water level approaches the danger threshold. In response, authorities have made a crucial decision to gradually open the 16 spillway gates of the Kaptai Dam starting Monday afternoon at 3 PM. Each gate will release water in increments of just six inches, with the aim of discharging approximately 9,000 cubic feet per second.

This measure was announced in an official notice issued late Sunday night by Mahmud Hasan, the manager of the Kaptai Karnaphuli Hydropower Station. According to the statement, the lake’s water level is currently at 107 meters above sea level, dangerously close to the critical limit. The decision to open the gates is intended to control the water level and prevent a potential disaster.

As part of ongoing power generation activities, five units are releasing a combined 32,000 cubic feet of water. However, if the monsoon continues in Rangamati and the water level rises further, the authorities may need to increase the height at which the spillway gates are opened.

This proactive approach aims to safeguard communities and the environment from flooding and other related hazards, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by climate variability and heavy rainfall in the region.
