Anthony Lanzi’s two Staffordshire bull terriers attacked real estate agents Tony Hutchinson and Phil Oakden during a scheduled property inspection in Waterbank in February 2024. The incident left the agents injured, with Mr. Hutchinson recounting that he feared for his life after falling to the ground during the attack. He managed to escape by climbing onto the bonnet of a car as his colleague distracted the dogs, the court heard.
Lanzi, 61, who previously pleaded guilty to multiple offences under WA’s Dog Act, was sentenced in Broome Magistrate’s Court on Friday. At the time of the attack, Lanzi was not present at the property.
Following the incident, Lanzi’s lawyer, Will Vogt, told the court that Lanzi had left a message for the real estate agents regarding the dogs through his property manager. However, prosecutors contested this account, disputing the claim.
Lanzi faced 11 charges, including five counts of dog attack or chase causing injury, three counts of failing to register a dog with local authorities, and allowing a declared dangerous dog to not wear a prescribed collar with the required information.
Additionally, four charges related to a separate dog attack in January this year in Coconut Wells, on the outskirts of Broome. The court’s decision underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and adherence to dog safety laws to prevent such dangerous incidents.
