A devastating plane crash at Oakey, west of Brisbane, claimed the lives of two men on Sunday afternoon. Emergency services responded to reports of a light aircraft coming down on Oakey Cooyar Road shortly after 3 PM.
Queensland Fire Department crews arrived to find the aircraft engulfed in flames, which they quickly extinguished. Despite efforts, the two men onboard could not be saved. Queensland Police Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Forbes described the scene as a “fireball,” noting that the aircraft was a twin turboprop Reims Cessna F406 involved in routine operations.
The property owner nearby heard a loud explosion and contacted emergency services. “The two occupants died on impact,” he said, describing the crash as a “very large fireball.” The aircraft had recently landed in Warwick before heading to its crash site.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) confirmed they are investigating the incident. A team from their Brisbane and Canberra offices will conduct detailed examinations, including site analysis, wreckage recovery, and interviews with involved parties. They will also review flight data, pilot records, aircraft maintenance logs, and weather conditions.
The identities of the deceased men have not yet been disclosed, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
