Iran has carried out a public execution of a man convicted of raping and murdering a teenage girl, according to the country’s judiciary.
As reported by Iran’s official judiciary media outlet, ‘Mizan Online,’ the victim’s family from the northwestern city of Boukan was actively involved in the legal proceedings from the beginning and requested the public hanging.
Iran’s Chief Justice Nasir Atabat’i stated, “Because the incident deeply shocked the public, the case was given special attention and considered with great seriousness.”
The individual was sentenced to death in March of this year, a sentence later approved by Iran’s Supreme Court.
Public executions, typically carried out by hanging, are not uncommon in Iran, especially in cases that are particularly heinous or that generate significant societal reaction.
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, report that crimes such as rape and murder are punishable by death in Iran, which ranks second in the world for the number of executions carried out annually, after China.
