Multiple international flights connecting Australia and Bali have been canceled, with several others delayed, following a second eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki within two months.
The eruption on Monday sent a towering plume of ash and volcanic debris soaring as high as 18 kilometers into the sky. This prompted Indonesia’s highest-level emergency alert on the tourist island of Flores. The country’s geohazard agency reported that the volcano unleashed a surge of intense gas clouds descending its slopes during the eruption.
The agency warned of potential dangerous lahars, or mudflows, especially if heavy rains occur near river areas. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.
Sources indicate that at least three international flights operated by a major airline to Bali were canceled on Monday. Further delays are expected on Tuesday depending on how the ash cloud moves overnight.
