The future of money is now in the palm of your hand. Marking a new milestone in the country’s digital economy, Google’s renowned digital payment service, Google Pay, has officially launched in Bangladesh for the first time. This groundbreaking initiative is made possible through a collaboration between Google, Mastercard, and Visa, facilitated by City Bank PLC.
The formal inauguration took place on Monday, June 24, in a hotel in Dhaka, with the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, attending as the chief guest. With his presence, the official operation of Google Pay commenced. The event was also graced by the Acting US Ambassador Tracy N. Jacobson and Hossain Khaled, Vice Chairman of City Bank.
Additional distinguished guests included Masrur Arefin, Managing Director and CEO of City Bank, Shammu Kuddus, Group Product Manager of Google Payments, Mohammad Kamal, Country Manager of Mastercard Bangladesh, and Sabbir Ahmed, Country Manager of Visa Bangladesh. Leaders from top banking and technology organizations across the country were present at the event.
Speaking about the partnership, Masrur Arefin emphasized that this collaboration reflects a commitment to building a future-oriented digital payment ecosystem in Bangladesh.
Initially, only City Bank’s Mastercard and Visa cardholders will be able to link their cards to Google Wallet and use the service. There is potential for other banks to join the platform in the future.
With Google Pay, customers can conduct quick, easy, and secure transactions at any point-of-sale terminal within the country or abroad through their Android phones. The service eliminates the need to carry physical cards.
Google Pay does not charge any transaction fees. To get started, users need only an Android smartphone and the Google Pay app. By linking their City Bank card and simply tapping their phone, they can make payments effortlessly, reducing the hassle of carrying cash or cards.
