New Design Banknotes to Hit the Market Before Eid-ul-Adha

The Bangladesh Bank has announced plans to introduce new-design banknotes into circulation ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. The new notes of 20, 50, and 1000 Taka are set to be released before the festival, featuring a combination of modern design elements alongside historical graffiti from the 1970s. This initiative aims to simultaneously bring a contemporary touch to the currency while honoring the country’s liberation history.

Sources from Bangladesh Bank and the Printing Corporation revealed that the printing of the 20-Taka note is nearly complete and will be handed over to banks within the next week. Following this, the 50 and 1000-Taka notes will also be distributed to banking institutions within the same timeframe. The central bank will then decide the official date for when these new notes will be available to the general public.

Officials from the Printing Corporation explained that designing and printing the new banknotes took approximately one to one and a half years. The plan for the new notes was initiated after mass student and youth protests in August last year. The formal decision to proceed was made in December, and printing began earlier this month. Due to limited printing capacity, only three denominations 20, 50, and 1000 Taka are being issued initially.

It is noteworthy that the exchange of the new notes was temporarily halted in March following controversy over including the image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the currency. Bangladesh Bank issued a directive to all banks instructing them to suspend the exchange and distribution of the new notes, preserving them in bank vaults until further notice.

This initiative to introduce new banknotes before Eid marks a historic step for the country’s economy. The blend of modern design with national heritage is expected to enrich the visual identity of Bangladesh’s currency and symbolize progress rooted in historical pride.
