The billion‑dollar success of Barbie has sparked intense speculation about a sequel but new reports suggest the film’s future is tangled in high‑stakes salary negotiations involving its two stars, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
According to Radar Online, director and co‑writer Greta Gerwig already has a script ready for Barbie 2, yet production has stalled as Warner Bros., Mattel and the lead actors attempt to reach a deal. If agreements are not finalised before December, the rights to produce another Barbie film reportedly revert to Mattel, adding pressure to close negotiations quickly.
Robbie, who earned around USD 50 million from the first film after bonuses, is said to be pushing for double that amount for the sequel. The outlet reports she believes the original film “exceeded every expectation” and that her contribution as both star and producer should be reflected in a significantly higher payday.
Gosling, who earned USD 12.5 million for the first film, is reportedly seeking a package worth around USD 50 million. Together, the pair are said to be holding out for a combined USD 150 million before committing to return as Barbie and Ken.
The negotiations come as Barbie continues to dominate pop culture after crossing the billion‑dollar mark at the global box office. The sequel, announced in 2025, already has new cast members attached, including Ariel Martin, Grace Van Dien and True Whitaker but its fate now hinges on whether the studio can meet the stars’ demands.
