Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists lifted their blockade at the Shahbagh intersection Tuesday afternoon, ending a nearly two-hour protest that had disrupted a vital city route for the second consecutive day. The demonstration was driven by their demand for a swift investigation into the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Dhaka University (DU) student and JCD activist, which they allege has been neglected by police authorities.
The activists had initially set up the blockade to pressure law enforcement to accelerate the probe and to ensure greater security for DU campus. JCD leaders issued stark warnings, threatening to paralyze not only Dhaka but the entire country if their demands were not met. They called for the resignation of the DU vice chancellor and proctor, accusing them of failing to maintain campus safety.
During the protest, JCD President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasiruddin Nasir delivered speeches, alongside other leaders and activists from Dhaka University and the Dhaka City North and South units.
While police have detained three individuals in connection with Shammo’s murder, JCD maintains that the “real culprits” remain at large. The organization suspects that minor criminals may be responsible and insists that a larger force or masterminds behind the crime have yet to be identified.
Shammo’s brother filed a case on May 14 at Shahbagh Police Station, naming 10 to 12 suspects. The ongoing investigation continues to stir tensions amid calls for justice and increased campus security.
