A new chapter of growth is unfolding at the bustling Chittagong port as Denmark-based shipping and logistics giant AP Moller Maersk charts ambitious plans to develop the Laldia Container Terminal. The project promises to be a game-changer for Bangladesh’s maritime infrastructure, with an investment of up to 800 million dollars now on the horizon.
Aishik Chowdhury, Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority and Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority, revealed the substantial commitment during his visit to various port facilities in Chittagong. He emphasized that developing ports is crucial for transforming Bangladesh into a global production hub. To achieve this, collaboration with the world’s leading port management companies is essential.
The timeline for the project is set for 2024, with operations scheduled to commence at the Laldia Terminal. Initially, the plan was to invest around 300 to 400 million dollars, but the figure has now been doubled, reflecting a strong confidence in the port’s potential. Experts believe that this significant investment will not only enhance the capacity of Bangladesh’s ports but also play a vital role in accelerating the country’s economic growth.
As the country gears up for this transformative phase, expectations are high that the expanded port facilities will open new avenues for trade, boost exports, and solidify Bangladesh’s position as a key player in global logistics.
