The Bangladesh national cricket team’s ongoing struggles in One Day Internationals are vividly reflected in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, released on Monday. The Tigers have fallen to 10th place after losing four rating points, marking a concerning dip in their performance over the past year.
Despite this decline in the limited-overs format, Bangladesh managed to hold onto their ninth position in both the Test and T20I rankings, showing some consistency across formats.
The current rankings are calculated based on team performances over the last three years, with recent results from the past 12 months weighted more heavily. Over this period, Bangladesh played eight ODIs, securing only a single victory, which has significantly impacted their position in the table.
In contrast, the West Indies have climbed one spot to 10th, buoyed by winning six of their nine ODIs during the same timeframe. England experienced a setback, dropping four rating points to fall to eighth, allowing Afghanistan to leapfrog into seventh place.
India and New Zealand continue to dominate the ODI rankings as the top two teams, having maintained their positions after reaching the finals of the last ICC Champions Trophy. Australia and Sri Lanka follow in third and fourth respectively, with Pakistan and South Africa occupying fifth and sixth positions.
In the Test rankings, Bangladesh’s performance remains steady with four wins in the past year, keeping them at ninth place. However, they still trail West Indies, who sit eighth, by eight rating points, highlighting the gap that needs bridging for Bangladesh to climb higher in the longer format.
As Bangladesh grapples with consistency issues across formats, the rankings serve as a stark reminder of the challenges ahead in regaining their former stature in international cricket.
