A desperate rescue operation is unfolding in Cali, where a unified command post has been activated to confront one of the city’s worst structural disasters in recent memory. Home to 2.2 million people, Cali has already recorded 95 deaths, and authorities warn the toll may rise as emergency teams continue digging through debris.
Mayor Alejandro Eder confirmed on Tuesday that 239 people remain trapped, with 949 injured and 45 buildings either partially or completely collapsed. The scale of destruction has overwhelmed first responders, who are working around the clock to reach survivors still calling out from beneath the rubble.
One of the city’s hospitals suffered catastrophic damage when several upper floors including paediatric wards collapsed. Some young patients were left trapped inside, forcing rescuers to navigate unstable structures to reach them.
Tragedy also struck the northern neighbourhood of Calima, where four children died after a section of the Gimnasio Calima school gave way. The collapse happened without warning, leaving families shattered and the community reeling.
As rescue teams push forward, Cali faces a long and painful recovery. The city’s resilience is being tested, but its determination remains unbroken.
