The Liberal Party’s candidate for the prominent Western Sydney seat of Fowler has issued an apology following the surfacing of a series of offensive social media posts. Vivek Singha expressed regret for multiple posts in which he used derogatory language toward Indigenous Australians and made personal attacks on Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek.
The posts, made on the platform X in 2023, emerged during the lead-up to the Voice to Parliament referendum, in which Singha was advocating for a ‘No’ vote. In October 2023, one post read: “50K per a**, already being spent, they’ll want 500K per head,” which was flagged by the platform for potentially violating rules against “hateful content.”
Between August and October 2023, Singha posted several times using offensive language targeting First Nations people. One such post called Indigenous Australians “lazybags” and urged others to “wake up to” them, reflecting deeply disrespectful sentiments.
Additionally, Singha posted a personal attack on Tanya Plibersek after reports that her daughter had experienced domestic violence. The post questioned her ability to protect her family, stating: “Worst of it all, why are YOU @tanya_plibersek of all people standing for others when you couldn’t even look after your own daughters safety… Anyword (sic) coming out of this person is as good as a puff frm the backside!!! cannot keep my home safe give me a blank cheque for a****.”
Further, media reports about Minister Plibersek’s husband were shared along with a comment suggesting her family’s struggles were indicative of broader national failures, saying, “Wow it is a great team (NOT) that is now leading the nation!!! That’s why her daughter was bashed.”
Singha’s apology comes amid mounting scrutiny of his past social media activity. The incident highlights ongoing debates about social media conduct and the importance of respectful discourse in political candidacy.
