A group of suspects, famously dubbed the “grandpa robbers,” is set to go on trial at the end of April, charged with orchestrating a high-profile jewelry theft from US reality TV star Kim Kardashian in Paris in 2016.
Described by the French press as “the heist of the century,” the audacious robbery saw masked men storm the luxury Parisian hotel where Kardashian was staying in October 2016. They made off with millions of dollars worth of jewelry, including a diamond engagement ring gifted to her by then-husband Kanye West.
Kardashian is expected to testify in person at the trial, which begins on April 28, according to her US lawyer Michael Rhodes. She recounted that two of the intruders threatened her with guns, and one of them, speaking in a “very strong French accent” in English, demanded her diamond engagement ring.
The ring from West, which Kardashian had prominently displayed on social media, was valued at around four million dollars. Following the theft, the intruders tied her up, gagged her, and carried her into the bathroom. Meanwhile, three men remained at the hotel reception—one waiting in a getaway car—serving as lookouts.
This brazen attack shocked the world, and the upcoming trial aims to bring justice for the daring theft that has remained one of the most infamous jewel heists in recent history.
