Yunus and Modi Meet Amid Tensions at BIMSTEC Summit Dinner

In a notable diplomatic encounter, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Prof. Mohammed Yunus, met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an official dinner at the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok on Thursday. The event, hosted by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at the Grand Ballroom of the Shangri-La Hotel, brought together leaders from member countries to discuss key regional issues.

Prime Minister Shinawatra welcomed the leaders and delivered a brief address, which was followed by toasts celebrating regional cooperation. Yunus seized the opportunity to capture moments with Shinawatra, posing for photographs during the dinner.

Earlier that day, Yunus arrived in Thailand to participate in the sixth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit and is scheduled to return to Dhaka on Friday night.

The anticipated discussions between Yunus and Modi are critical, especially given the strained bilateral relations following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5 last year. After Hasina’s exile, India was accused of disseminating misleading information about Bangladesh and taking controversial actions along the Bangladesh-India border, further complicating diplomatic ties.

Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin expressed optimism about the talks, emphasizing their importance for peace, stability, and trade between the neighboring countries. The BIMSTEC summit, which includes Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, aims to strengthen bilateral relationships and address a range of collaborative issues among member states.
