National Citizen Party Leader Doubts Feasibility of Upcoming Elections in Bangladesh

1 min read

Nahid Islam, leader of the National Citizen Party and former information advisor, has expressed skepticism about the possibility of holding elections in Bangladesh this year. He stated that the interim government has yet to ensure a conducive environment and complete security for the populace necessary for a fair electoral process.

In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, March 6, Nahid remarked, “Over the past seven months, we all hoped that the political system and rule of law would be restored through short-term reforms. While there has been some progress, it has not met our expectations. Considering the current state of governance and the political landscape, I do not believe it will be possible to hold national elections this year.”

The political climate has been tumultuous since last year, when former authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country amidst widespread protests. Subsequently, Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed the role of interim government head on August 8. In recent interviews, the chief advisor has indicated plans to conduct elections by the end of this year. However, Nahid Islam’s comments suggest a stark contrast in outlook, highlighting the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the electoral process in Bangladesh.
