An investigation has been initiated against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and her family members over allegations of massive embezzlement linked to infrastructure projects. At the center of these accusations is Tulip Siddiq, Sheikh Hasina’s niece and a minister in the UK Labour Party.
Recently, Tulip Siddiq was interrogated by the UK’s Cabinet Office’s ethics and integrity team. The allegations suggest her involvement in a scheme to siphon off nearly £4 billion through a nuclear project in Bangladesh.
According to a report by The Sunday Times, Tulip’s name has emerged in connection with corruption allegations related to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. It is claimed that she colluded with Russian entities to benefit her aunt Sheikh Hasina’s family.
Last Thursday, representatives from the PET visited Tulip Siddiq’s office to inquire about the allegations. She responded regarding her involvement in the £10 billion Rooppur project, asserting her innocence.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission has also begun investigations into several other family members of Sheikh Hasina. The long-standing government has faced serious accusations of suppressing dissent and committing crimes against humanity.
Arrest warrants have been issued against Sheikh Hasina and members of her cabinet, with over 45 individuals named, many of whom have fled the country.
Now the pressing question remains: what will be the outcome of this investigation? Will the truth emerge from the shadows of corruption? It’s uncertain whether this incident will ignite a new wave of political energy in Bangladesh, but it certainly has the potential to mark the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s political landscape.
