As the UK witnessed its biggest partial solar eclipse in nearly 30 years, one soundtrack rose above all others: Bonnie Tyler’s iconic 1983 hit, Total Eclipse of the Heart. In the coastal village of Mumbles, Swansea, where Tyler once lived, the power ballad could be heard drifting through streets, cafés and homes as locals gathered to watch the celestial spectacle.
Tyler born Gaynor Hopkins became a global sensation with her gravelly voice, dramatic style and unforgettable blonde hair. More than four decades later, her signature song has cemented its place as one of the most enduring anthems of the 1980s. And on Wednesday, as the moon slid across the sun, the track found new life.
Spotify reported that streams of Total Eclipse of the Heart almost doubled on 12 August, with a 94% surge in the UK and a 14% rise globally, as millions sought the perfect soundtrack for the rare astronomical event.
Musician Mal Pope, a close friend of Tyler’s, watched the eclipse from Langland Bay. He said the beloved Welsh singer who died in July at age 75 was on everyone’s mind. As he walked through the area, he heard children “singing along” to the song, their voices carrying through the village in a touching tribute.
For many, the eclipse was a moment of wonder. For Mumbles, it became a moment of remembrance a celestial curtain call for a Welsh legend whose music continues to eclipse generations.
