A Canadian citizen is facing serious legal consequences after allegedly attempting to smuggle over 11 kilograms of cocaine into Australia. The 38-year-old was intercepted by Australian Border Force officers at Sydney Airport, where a baggage examination revealed 10 vacuum-sealed packages testing positive for cocaine.
The packages weighed approximately 11.6 kilograms, and the individual has been charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, a crime that could lead to life imprisonment under the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The accused appeared at Sutherland Local Court and is scheduled for a subsequent hearing at Downing Centre Local Court in February 2025. Authorities have described the smuggling attempt as audacious, emphasizing the significant threat such an operation poses to the community.
Detective Acting Superintendent Dom Stephenson warned that anyone attempting to smuggle drugs into the country will face severe legal repercussions.
