Biden Administration Monitors Bangladesh’s Turbulent Security Landscape

US President Joe Biden is closely observing the precarious security situation in Bangladesh, four months post the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Officials from the White House have been actively collaborating with Bangladeshi law enforcement to address the security challenges arising from this regime change.

During a press briefing on Thursday, National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby highlighted the administration’s vigilance. “We’re watching this very closely, and the president is following events as well,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of accountability for any potential attacks on individuals, regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

The interim government led by Prof. Muhammad Yunus is grappling with escalating security issues, including arbitrary street blockades by various civilian groups and a surge in violent criminal activities. The situation is further complicated by the presence of officers loyal to Hasina within the police force.

In the midst of these challenges, some Indian media outlets and certain political factions have been accused of disseminating unfounded reports regarding attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh. Lalit K Jha, head of the PTI bureau in Washington DC, claimed without evidence that violence against Hindus and vandalism of temples have intensified since Hasina’s removal on August 5. He referenced protests by American Hindu groups as purported justification for his claims.

When questioned by Jha about President Biden’s awareness of these issues and his discussions with Yunus at the UN, Kirby reaffirmed the US commitment to protecting religious and ethnic minorities in Bangladesh. “We have been very clear in our engagement with all Bangladeshi leaders that security for all Bangladeshis, regardless of religion or ethnicity, is paramount,” he said.

Kirby noted the ongoing difficulties in the security landscape following Hasina’s ouster, reiterating the US’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of Bangladesh’s law enforcement and security services to effectively navigate these challenges.
