Revitalizing the Riverfront: Perth’s Ambitious $1 Billion Vision

2 min read

In a bold move to transform the heart of Perth, city councillors have unveiled a sweeping $1 billion masterplan aimed at redeveloping the CBD’s riverfront. This visionary project, reminiscent of Brisbane’s iconic South Bank, proposes an expansive 2.2-kilometre stretch along the Swan River, stretching from East Perth to the Supreme Court Gardens. If approved, the initiative promises a stunning lagoon, pristine beaches, a ferry stop, and a lushly green Langley Park.

Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas expressed his optimism regarding the project, believing that the state and federal governments will recognize its potential. However, initial reactions from government officials have been less than enthusiastic. Environment Minister Reece Whitby raised concerns during a recent press conference, suggesting that the announcement might be more of a political maneuver than a genuine proposal.

“It’s a bit late in the day to be flying a kite like this; at the 11th hour, to put out some pretty pictures and a billion-dollar pipe dream,” Whitby remarked. He emphasized the need for clarity on whether this plan aligns with Liberal Party policies and questioned the Lord Mayor’s track record in driving meaningful change.

The ambitious proposal aims to enhance the area with 3,000 new trees at Langley Park, alongside sports facilities, walking trails, two hotels, and a vibrant food and drinks precinct. Zempilas has highlighted a growing consensus among the community that the current space could be much better utilized, setting the stage for a future where Perth’s riverfront becomes a dynamic hub of activity and natural beauty.
