A bushfire that threatened homes in Champion Lakes has been downgraded from an emergency level. The fire, which ignited near Mustang Road around 3:36 PM, led to the closure of Tonkin Highway between Ranford Road and Corfield Street.
By 8:30 PM, firefighters managed to contain the blaze, prompting authorities to lower the alert to a watch-and-act level, indicating that lives and homes were no longer in immediate danger. However, residents in the surrounding areas—Verna Street, Passmore Street, Corfield Street, Eileen Street, Seaforth Avenue, Koorden Close, Lake Road, and Ranford Road—were urged to stay vigilant as conditions could change rapidly.
The bushfire, fueled by strong winds, was moving in a northwesterly direction, with flames encroaching on nearby bushland. Commuters were advised to avoid the area, as dozens of families gathered along Wright Lake to monitor the situation.
In addition to the Champion Lakes incident, residents in regions like Cataby, Mimegarra, Cooljaraloo, and Wedge Island were warned of potential ember attacks from another bushfire.
As the bushfire season intensifies in southern Western Australia, Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson has cautioned that years of low rainfall could lead to a prolonged and severe fire season.
