After a disappointing Euro 2024 in which the home team was eliminated in the quarterfinals, Germany striker Thomas Mueller announced on Monday that he was quitting the game of international football.
“I am saying goodbye after 131 national team games and 45 goals,” Mueller declared in a video statement announcing his decision. Mueller, who turns 35 in September, played a significant role in the German team’s World Cup victory in 2014.
The dynamic forward also netted the first goal in Germany’s historic 7-1 victory over Brazil, the home team, in the semifinals.
“I could never have dreamed of all this when I played my first international match for the German national team over 14 years ago,” Mueller stated in the video.
Playing for my nation has always made me incredibly proud. We shared joy and occasionally even shed tears together,” he remarked. Mueller had made mention of retirement, shedding tears, after Germany’s elimination from Euro 2024.
The hosts of the competition lost to Spain 2-1 in the quarterfinals; Spain went on to defeat England to win the trophy on Sunday, Mueller announced he would speak with Julian Nagelsmann, the coach of the national team, to determine if it was the “sensible option” to give way to younger players of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning team still playing for the national team is keeper Manuel Neuer.
