Wildfire Tears Through Southern France as Heatwave Fuels Rapid Spread

2 min read

A devastating wildfire is sweeping across the Pyrénées-Orientales region of southern France, where relentless heat and bone‑dry conditions have helped flames engulf nearly 5,000 hectares of forest more than 12,000 acres over the past two days. Fire crews say the situation remains extremely difficult, with containment efforts falling short as temperatures continue to soar.

France has been gripped by a severe heatwave since 20 June, with 61 departments recording daily highs between 35°C and 38°C. In the south, the mercury has climbed even higher, reaching 41°C, creating the perfect conditions for wildfires to spread with alarming speed.

According to state broadcaster BFM TV, around 800 firefighters are battling the blaze on the ground. More than 12,000 residents have already been evacuated from threatened areas in Pyrénées‑Orientales. Local authorities and fire services warn that the fire is not yet under control, and the chances of rapid containment remain slim.

Colonel Eric Belgionio, head of the region’s Fire and Rescue Service, said preventing further spread is now their top priority. “Our biggest goal is to stop the wildfire from expanding. We hope to bring it under control, but the current situation suggests that won’t happen quickly.”
