Two workers have died following an explosion at a hydroelectric power plant in southern Switzerland, with authorities describing the incident as a “serious workplace accident.”
The explosion occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. local time at the Ritom hydroelectric power plant in the village of Piotta, located in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Emergency services were called after reports of a fire inside the facility.
According to preliminary findings, the blast involved two workers for reasons that have yet to be determined. Both men suffered critical injuries and later died as a result of the explosion.
Police identified one of the victims as a 55-year-old Swiss national, while the second worker was still undergoing formal identification procedures. Authorities also reported that the power plant sustained extensive structural damage.
Investigators are now working to determine the exact cause of the explosion and the circumstances leading up to the fatal accident. No further details have been released.
