Spain is facing a critical race against time as firefighters battle massive wildfires that have already forced tens of thousands to evacuate. Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska said Monday that the country has entered an “absolutely decisive” two‑day window to bring the blazes under control before temperatures rise sharply mid‑week.
“Today and tomorrow are absolutely decisive days, because from Wednesday the weather forecasts become highly unfavorable for firefighting efforts,” he told reporters, warning that worsening heat and wind conditions could dramatically escalate the crisis.
The wildfires part of a broader wave sweeping across southern Europe have stretched emergency services to their limits. With hotter, drier weather expected from Wednesday, authorities fear containment lines could fail, potentially triggering further evacuations.
Spain’s emergency crews are working across multiple fronts, using aircraft, ground teams and reinforcements from neighbouring regions as they try to stabilise fire zones before conditions deteriorate.
