Socceroos’ Stunning Win Over Türkiye Marks a New Era of Belief and Maturity

2 min read

Australia’s commanding performance against Türkiye a side stacked with some of the brightest young talents in world football may have surprised outsiders, but for coach Tony Popovic, it was simply the next step in a journey years in the making.

Popovic said the match showcased the team’s evolution, both individually and collectively. “We’ve seen the evolution of the team, the growth of the team,” he said. “We’ve seen players maturing individually, but also being able to act collectively as one. It’s been building, and that was a game where it all came together the belief, being present in the moment, understanding it’s a World Cup for many of the boys for the first time, but playing as if they belong there.”

That belief was embodied by Patrick Beach, Paul Okon‑Engstler and Nestory Irankunda, all of whom justified Popovic’s bold decision to start them in Australia’s opening World Cup match. Their confidence and composure did not go unnoticed especially by US coach Mauricio Pochettino, who faces the Socceroos next.

“They create a great mentality and it’s difficult to play against a team that really believes in what they are doing,” Pochettino said. “A team full of confidence, with a clear style of football. It’s going to be really tough a very good test for us.”

Before the tournament began, Australia had been widely written off, particularly by US commentators who dismissed the Socceroos as easy beats. But Pochettino now sees a very different picture. “They are a very strong team, really believing in what they are doing,” he said. “The mentality, the mindset, the belief that’s what makes them dangerous. We need to match that if we want to compete.”

For Popovic, the win over Türkiye wasn’t a shock upset it was validation. A sign that his young squad not only belongs on the world stage, but is ready to challenge anyone who doubts them.
