SA Power Networks Launches Massive Insulator Replacement Project to Prevent Outages

1 min read

SA Power Networks is preparing for one of its largest maintenance operations ever, with a six‑month project aimed at preventing widespread power outages caused by deteriorating insulators across the state.

Cecilia Schutz from SA Power Networks said the initiative has been declared the department’s highest‑priority project, with more than 25,000 work hours scheduled and around 50 workers rotating through the job until the end of the year. She described it as “one of our biggest workforce mobilisations ever.”

The work comes in response to prolonged dry conditions that allow dust, salt and contaminants to build up on powerline insulators. When even light moisture is added, these materials can trigger flashover events, causing sudden outages. Repeated flashovers accelerate insulator damage, making failures more frequent unless the equipment is replaced.

Beginning in July, crews will replace 10,000 insulators across 33 powerlines. The project also includes installing 15 high‑voltage automation switches, which will allow SA Power Networks to isolate faults more precisely and restore power faster by limiting outages to smaller, targeted areas.

The upgrade is expected to significantly improve network reliability ahead of future summer seasons, when dust and moisture conditions often combine to create the perfect environment for flashovers.
