Pilot Stabbed Mid-Flight as Passengers Help Avert Disaster on Flydubai Service to Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said it is too early to determine the motive behind a dramatic mid-air incident in which one pilot allegedly stabbed another and attempted to seize control of a Flydubai passenger aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

The incident occurred on Wednesday aboard Flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 passengers from Dubai International Airport to Ben-Gurion Airport in Israel. According to reports, the aircraft suddenly descended more than 17,000 feet (5,200 metres) approximately two hours into the journey before passengers and crew intervened to help regain control of the plane.

The injured pilot, Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, was rushed to hospital following the emergency and is reported to be in stable condition. Netanyahu praised the captain’s actions, describing him as a “true hero” for his role during the crisis.

One passenger, Yaniv Hayun, said he helped restrain the alleged attacker after realizing the situation unfolding in the cockpit. According to his account, he placed the suspect in a chokehold while other passengers assisted in pinning him down and preventing further actions.

Israeli officials said the suspect was arrested after the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu indicated that the individual is expected to be transferred to the United Arab Emirates, where the flight originated.

When asked whether there were any indications of Iranian involvement, Netanyahu said investigators were still gathering information and that it was too early to draw conclusions.

US President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Netanyahu following the incident and suggested the attack may have involved terrorism or another unidentified motive, though he stressed that authorities were still investigating.

According to Netanyahu, Israel had received no prior intelligence or warning about any threat connected to the flight.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft departed Dubai at 03:05 GMT and was proceeding normally before the sudden altitude change was recorded. Shortly afterward, the aircraft reportedly transmitted the emergency code 7700, indicating a general emergency, before later switching to 7500, the internationally recognized code used to signal a hijacking situation.

Roughly 20 minutes after the emergency codes were transmitted, the aircraft began a controlled descent toward Saudi Arabia for an emergency landing. Less than an hour later, the emergency transponder returned to the general distress code.

Eyewitness accounts and statements from Israeli officials indicate that one pilot allegedly attacked the other with a knife and may have attempted to bring down the aircraft. However, investigators have not yet released formal findings regarding the events inside the cockpit.

Air safety authorities are expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident, including the actions of the suspect, cockpit security procedures, and the circumstances that allowed the attack to occur.

The successful intervention by crew members and passengers is being credited with preventing what could have become a major aviation disaster.
