Nicole Kidman Says Becoming a Death Doula Is “Part of Her Expansion” as She Reflects on Her Mother’s Final Days

2 min read

Nicole Kidman has opened up about her decision to train as a death doula, acknowledging that it may sound “a little weird” to some, but describing it as an important part of her personal growth and future path.

Speaking about the experience, Kidman said the most difficult part of her acting career has always been “stamina” which she defined as taking care of her physical and mental health so she can continue to show up fully for her work.

Kidman revealed that her mother’s final months deeply shaped her decision.

“As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide,” she said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. With her father gone and both she and her sister juggling children and demanding careers, she found herself wishing for someone who could sit with her mother impartially and offer comfort.

That longing, she explained, led her to the idea of becoming a death doula someone trained to provide emotional, practical and spiritual support to people at the end of life.

While Kidman didn’t say how this new role might affect her future on‑screen work, she made clear that caring for her wellbeing and showing up with intention remains central to her craft.

Her decision adds another unexpected chapter to her already wide‑ranging life and career.
