Iran has carried out a drone attack on a US military ship stationed in the Oman Sea, according to Iranian state agency Tasnim News. The strike comes shortly after the US Navy seized an Iran‑flagged vessel, sharply escalating tensions between the two countries. The BBC reported that no damage to the US ship has yet been confirmed.
Iran’s elite military unit, Khatam al‑Anbiya, had earlier warned that the seizure of an Iranian vessel was a violation of the ongoing ceasefire and would be met with a “severe response.”
The United States and Iran agreed to a two‑week ceasefire on April 8 after 40 days of conflict, but the truce is set to expire on April 22. Despite holding nearly 21 hours of talks in Islamabad on April 11, the two sides failed to reach any agreement.
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced he would send his representatives back to Islamabad for renewed negotiations. He also warned that if Iran refused to accept US terms, Washington would target Iran’s power plants and bridges.
However, after the US seized the Iranian vessel, Iranian media reported that Tehran will no longer send delegates to Islamabad for talks a sign that diplomatic efforts may be collapsing.
The flare‑up in the Oman Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, has raised serious concerns about regional stability and global energy security.
