Giant Petrel Sparks Biosecurity Alert on Noosa Beach as Rescuers Race to Prevent Possible Bird Flu Spread

2 min read

Weekend crowds soaking up the winter sunshine at Noosa Main Beach were met with an unexpected sight wildlife rescuer Will Watson in a full hazmat suit, crouched beside a sick northern giant petrel lying motionless on the sand. While beachgoers enjoyed the holiday atmosphere, Watson was responding to a potential H5 avian influenza threat that demanded immediate containment.

Watson, from Wildlife Noosa, said the protective gear was essential until test results confirmed whether the bird carried the highly contagious strain. “I felt a bit silly wearing the white overalls but it had to be done,” he said. “We’re told to gown up and wear everything until we know what’s going on.”

The petrel was first taken to RSPCA Queensland’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Eumundi, where it was swabbed for H5 bird flu on Saturday. It was then transferred to Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue at Landsborough, where it remains in quarantine.

The Twinnies Bridgette and Paula Powers, well‑known wildlife carers discovered years ago by Steve Irwin said results could take several days. Their mother, Helen Powers, trained in bird flu preparedness in Western Australia last year, oversaw the quarantine process. “Usually we’ve got pet pack carriers, but we put the bird in a cardboard box so we could walk straight through into our quarantine room,” they said.

The Twinnies recently launched a social‑media appeal to raise $30,000 for a larger quarantine facility at their Sunshine Coast refuge. They hit the target within 48 hours, a testament to the community’s trust in their work. “Better to be early than late,” they said, emphasising the importance of rapid response in potential biosecurity cases.

As the petrel remains under observation, wildlife teams continue to monitor the situation closely a reminder that even on Queensland’s most iconic beaches, nature can deliver sudden and serious challenges.
