Hawaii Governor Josh Green confirmed one person died in a weather‑related car accident on Big Island, where numerous roads have been washed out or blocked by debris.

By early Sunday, Hawaii County reported flash flooding in two Big Island areas, noting that “several occupied homes may have been swept off their foundations.” Mayor Kimo Alameda said search and rescue teams are working urgently to locate residents whose homes may have been carried away.

“What makes this very challenging is that there’s rushing water, there’s debris, there’s boulders on the road, and it’s dark,” he said, describing the dangerous conditions facing emergency crews.

Videos released by Hawaii’s Department of Transportation show roads transformed into rivers of fast‑moving water, blocked by fallen trees and scattered debris a stark illustration of the storm’s destructive force.

As Hurricane Lala continues westward, authorities are urging residents to stay indoors, avoid flooded areas and monitor official alerts for evacuation orders and safety updates.
