Five men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of terrorism offences have been released on police bail, counter‑terrorism officers confirmed on Monday, as investigations continue into what authorities described as a “major incident” in Gloucestershire.
The alarm was raised in the early hours of Sunday when police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles close to the airbase, prompting the evacuation of dozens of homes and a large emergency response. The men all UK nationals in their 20s from London were initially detained under the Explosives Act, before being further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) said the men remain under investigation and their release is subject to strict conditions governing their movements and communications. Officers are pursuing “multiple lines of inquiry,” including whether the suspects may have been acting as proxies for a foreign state.
Police said three of the men live in Westminster, one in Camden, and another in Willesden, with ages ranging from 23 to 25. The investigation is expected to continue for several weeks as officers analyse evidence, vehicle movements and potential international links.
The incident has heightened security concerns around RAF Fairford, a key strategic base used by US and UK forces.
