Australian DJ Josh Fawaz Adds AI Credits to Hit Single After Industry Scrutiny

2 min read

Australian DJ and producer Josh Fawaz has formally added AI credits to his chart‑topping cover of Like a Prayer, following an ABC investigation that sparked widespread debate over the role of generative technology in modern music.

The Madonna remake has dominated the Australian national airplay charts for four consecutive weeks, drawing both praise and criticism as fans and industry figures questioned how extensively Fawaz used AI tools in crafting the track. The conversation intensified after Spotify’s global head of artists, marketing and policy, Sam Duboff, told the ABC that the platform is urging legitimate artists to declare their use of AI through a new beta feature a move introduced after Spotify removed 75 million “spammy tracks” over the past year.

In response, Fawaz updated the song’s credits to include Generative AI vocals and AI drums on Like a Prayer, featured on his album Dance Like Everyone’s Watching. His 2026 album Dance Like Nobody’s Watching is also performing strongly, currently sitting at number 14 on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Albums chart.

The viral single has amassed more than 38 million streams on Spotify, cementing its place as one of the year’s biggest dance releases. It sits at number one on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Dance Singles chart and number four on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Singles chart after previously peaking at number two. Fawaz’s track Danceteria has debuted at number nine on the ARIA Top Dance Singles chart, while Like a Prayer remains at number four.

A fresh set of ARIA charts is expected on Friday afternoon, but for now, Fawaz’s AI‑enhanced hit continues to dominate  and fuel a global conversation about how artificial intelligence is reshaping the sound of popular music.
