Justice Thomas Bradley has officially been sworn in as Queensland’s 28th Governor, marking a significant new chapter in the state’s constitutional and civic leadership.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in the Queensland Parliament, where Justice Bradley delivered his first address as Governor and outlined his commitment to connecting with communities across the state.

Joined by his partner, Dr Matthew Yoong, the new Governor said he was eager to engage with Queenslanders not only in Brisbane but throughout regional and remote areas.

“We aim to spend as much time out of Brisbane as we spend in it,” Justice Bradley said.

“To help harness the wisdom, the skill and the goodwill that is in every community as we all answer the call of the Olympic motto, which is to go faster, higher and stronger, together.”

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described the appointment as a significant moment for the state, praising Justice Bradley’s extensive legal experience and public service record.

Justice Bradley served on the Queensland Supreme Court from 2018 before being appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2025. Crisafulli said his judicial career had equipped him well for the responsibilities of the vice-regal role.

“You have encountered people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives. You have listened to them, weighed decisions of profound consequence and helped bring resolution,” the Premier said.

Beyond his work in the legal profession, Justice Bradley has built a strong record of community involvement. His roles have included serving as chair of the Brisbane Festival Giving Committee, ambassador for the Pinnacle Foundation, and a member of the Gallery of Modern Art Foundation Committee.

Opposition Leader Steven Miles also welcomed the appointment, saying Queensland benefits when public institutions reflect the diversity and values of the broader community.

“That is the Queensland we are all proud of and the Queensland His Excellency represents,” Miles said.

Justice Bradley’s appointment comes as Queensland prepares for a decade of major growth and international attention leading up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the new Governor expected to play an important ceremonial and community leadership role throughout that period.
